Introduction to paddling

stage 1: paddlepower start


This is an introduction to paddling in kayaks and open canoes for 9-14 yr olds.

Participants will be introduced to methods of moving the craft forwards, backwards, sideways and turning whilst playing various games to consolidate their new skills. Instruction is delivered by a qualified BCU/UKCC coach with over 20 years of experience in Australia, New Zealand, America and England. Further coaching can be arranged for those wishing to progress on to the Paddlepower ‘Passport’ Award or the BCU 1 and 2 Star Awards.

All participants have the opportunity to gain a ‘Paddlepower Start’ Award certificate at the end of the session, subject to fulfilling the course requirements.

Stage 2: paddlepower passport

Paddlepower Passport comprises four progressive Levels that guide the new paddler from the initial ‘Start’ session through various Topics. These encourage each paddler to achieve recognisable standards in a range of skills and areas of knowledge. The four progressive levels are based on 24 topics which can be grouped into Safety Awareness, Paddling Skills, Varied Experiences, and Supporting Knowledge.

Instruction is delivered by a qualified BCU/UKCC coach with over 20 years of experience in Australia, New Zealand, America and England.

The ‘Passport’ course has a colourful Progress Card for the young paddler to record their progress and to encourage them to move to the next stage with a BCU certificate awarded on completion of each award, subject to fulfilling the course requirements.

Cost for the course is £85pp (2-3 people), £75pp (4-6 people) or £70pp (7-8 people) which includes the progres booklet

Guided kayaking tours

Our guided kayak tours are for those traditionalists that prefer sit-in type kayaks built for general purpose as well as river day touring. Tours will travel along the River Rother from Newenden to Scott’s Sluice, Iden, the last lock before Rye’s tidal waters.

The journey takes approximately 3 hours, stopping along the way to take in all the beauty of the Rother and surrounding countryside. The tour starts at 9am, after an initial safety brief, and aims to finish at Scott’s Float at 12pm where participants will be transferred, by road, back to Newenden for a light lunch at 1pm, all included in the cost.

Participants need to be 14 yrs of age and above and under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult. There is a minimum of 4 participants to run the tour and a maximum of 8.

Option 1: Bodiam to Newenden OR Newenden to Bodiam £45pp (4+ people; £30 each)
Option 2: Newenden to Scotts Sluice OR Newenden to Bodiam and return £75pp (4+ people; £50 each)
Option 3: Bodiam to Scotts Sluice £100pp (4+ people; £75 each)
